San Francisco, CA ¾ December 8, 1997 - Consulting and Information Services firm Human Communications today announced plans to publish an updated report on Facsimile Routing at the FaxWorld 97 conference sponsored by the GIGA Information Group. The report, entitled "A Supplementary Report on Fax Routing Standards and Practice", will be the second issue of the publication Human Communications Standards Update and is targeted for publication in February, 1998. The first report in this series, which also reported on Facsimile Routing, was given the "Best Fax Report of 1997" award by the American Facsimile Association. The new report will include the results of a new, more extensive survey of vendors plans in facsimile routing and, for the first time, a survey of vendor plans for Internet fax routing and Least Cost Routing options in their facsimile products.

Facsimile routing has emerged in numerous surveys of business customers as being one of the main areas where the implementation of Group 3 fax on computers needs improvement. In July, 1996, the International Telecommunications Union responded to this need by approving a new international standard for "Fax Routing Utilizing the Subaddress" known as the T.33 recommendation. In the first report on this topic released in December 1996, seventy two percent of the facsimile companies surveyed had definite plans to implement subaddress based routing. The new report will include the results from an updated vendor survey and measure progress in fax routing deployment in fax products since the initial survey. Internet fax has been the hottest topic in the fax industry in 1997 and the report will also provide a preview of vendor plans for routing of facsimile messages over the Internet.

"The development of standards based fax routing has been a major milestone for the fax industry, " according to James Rafferty, President of Human Communications and the report’s author. "Products based on these standards are enabling fax messages to be delivered directly to recipients on Local Area Networks and on other networks such as the Internet. One of the latest routing options is to send fax messages over the Internet or Intranets, so we have also polled vendors on their current plans for Internet fax routing options. The purpose of this Standards Update is to provide practical advice and how-to information that will help vendors and customers to realize the benefits of Fax Routing and Internet fax as soon as possible."
